I hadn’t done this in awhile (maybe because it looks a tad foolish or maybe because I have less balance these days) but sometimes, I tilt my head back till I can no longer see leveled ground and just, stare. And I take my hands, place them strategically so as to block the buildings and the distractions of the urban atmosphere, and as I do, it feels as if I’ve been lying back on some cosmic bed out there in the universe, far from the world.

Yeah. I am weird, aren’t I? *sigh… To be Joana Medina.

Okay maybe that was an exaggeration. Let’s just say, I’ve struggled to finish any of the previous blogs I’ve started and therefore stopped attempting to do so altogether.

Here’s me attempting to squeeze out some thoughts over the past 11 months.

Sounds unhealthy, considering the field of study I’m entering into will be that of the writing variety. Maybe I should actually learn to function on a basic human level.

The beauty/curse of computer technologies: spell-check. As I type this, if I ever thought “different” was spelled “divvrnt”, I would be told by the red-auto-underline-thingamajig  that my knowledge concerning this particularly word is sh*thouse. Not to mention it’d also tell me my name is not in the dictionary making me question my actual existence/significance in this world. Oh, to be defined by spell-check.

I need to stop writing this nonsense. It means… nothing.

*sits in silence till brain dissolves*

4am to be precise.

And I blame the following mental discretion on my disrupted slumber.

Suddenly I felt crippled with thoughts of the belittling kind. The fact that my mind had yet to recover properly from its rest made the thoughts all the more believable and it stirred me to the point that I needed to do something besides recycle the same thoughts of inadequacy over and over and over instead of entertaining it further.

I picked up the book I’d be reading the day before and continued. I then proceeded to make myself some breakfast along with feeding our new baby kitten. Meet Mischka (yeah, I don’t like the name either. My sister calls her Ming-Ming)

She’s learning to bite and is eating much more than my dog does. I’m pretty sure I’ll find her less appealing when she’s a big, grubby cat who rubs up against you when in need of food but in her delicate state, she’s partially under my care.

I’ve been sick the past few days but I’ve recently been getting better. And I’ve also been exceptionally skint therefore explaining my lack of health food consumption. A healthy lifestyle is pretty darn expensive.

But I have been reading more recently! A lifestyle I had inadvertently neglected.

This blog was actually meant to bear more substance and involve more than facts about my body clock and day-to-day discrepancies. I wanted to share a short story with you that I read from a book I borrowed from a friend by Paulo Coelho called “Like The Flowing River”. Take the time to read it, it’s lovely.

The Story of the Pencil

A boy was watching his grandmother write a letter. At one point he asked:

‘Are you writing a story about what we’ve done? Is it a story about me?’

His grandmother stopped writing her letter and said to her grandson:

‘I am writing about you, actually, but more important than the words is the pencil I’m using. I hope you will be like this pencil when you grow up.’

Intrigued, the boy looked at the pencil. It didn’t seem very special.

‘But it’s just like any other pencil I’ve ever seen!’

‘That depends on how you look at things. It has five qualities which, if you manage to hang on them, will make you a person who is always at peace with the world.’

‘First quality: you are capable of great things, but you must never forget that there is a hand guiding your steps. We call that hand God, and He always guides us according to His will.’

‘Second quality: now and then, I have to stop writing and use a sharpner. That makes the pencil suffer a little, but afterwards, he’s much sharper. So you, too, must learn to bear certain pains and sorrows, because they will make you a better person.

‘Third quality: the pencil always allows us to use an eraser to rub out any mistakes. This means that correcting something we did is not necessarily a bad thing; it helps to keep us on the road to justice.’

‘Fourth quality: what really matters in a pencil is not its wooden exterior, but the graphite inside. So always pay attention to what is happening inside you.’

‘Finally, the pencil’s fifth quality: it always leaves a mark. in just the same way, you should know that everything you do in life will leave a mark, so try to be conscious of that in your every action’

There’s a reason why I have few friends haha.

Everyone seems to be blogging these days. And, don’t get me wrong I love it but for some reason when an activity becomes increasingly active in the outside world, I have a tendency to do it less. It’s like… Monkey-See, Monkey-Don’t Do.

Yes.

I absolutely LOVE reading blogs.  So know that if you do blog, you are being carefully ogled by me. With the purest love and most platonic of interest as humanly possible.

Anyway, I’ve decided to balance out the posts: at least one blog every week with one video. Because I haven’t been able to distribute them into healthy increments (if you haven’t noticed, I’ve posted around 4 videos last week alone, my goodness).

I’ve been working on writing some songs which is becoming annoyingly hard.

This project is bringing out the worst in me. I start thinking, “Who are you kidding? Do you think you’re good enough to make an album? Preposterous!” And it’s all thought out in a British accent too. Ridiculously and pretentiously so.

But I’m jumping in the pool of uncertainty. I may not be the most awesome but I will make the efforts because I only have one life. Why limit myself?

Every time I come across the very appealing slogan that tingles and prods at the health-fueled conviction-centers of my cranium, I am led to marvel at it’s factual too-good-to-be-true ways in a series of questions/answers/stating-the-obvious-in-lame-hyperbole type of pondering :

“All natural?

All good?

All healthy?

All AWESOME?!”.

Isn’t life wonderful when your food gives you an awesome promise that when you consume it, your tummy and inner goodness will not be tarnished by unnatural preservatives AND refrain from expanding and burning in a pit of unhealthy/metaphorical sulfuric acid of junk and artificial spite?

Wonderful as that may be for the foods who bear the above-mentioned attributes, I am led to the neurosis of this hypothesis/truth: When one of those 3 of the phrases are excreted or separated from the presence of the two, ie:

NO ARTIFICIAL COLOURS
NO ARTIFICIAL FLAVOURS

or

NO ARTIFICIAL COLOURS
NO PRESERVATIVES

or
NO ARTIFICIAL FLAVOURS
NO PRESERVATIVES

etc.,

…the quality of the product is compromised. With such a thought in the pits of my rather active mind, I go a little crazy. I start to have mental debates to a jury in my own head. All bets are off. It’s a war of legalities, leading to a sudden criminal-leveled investigation, inspecting and interrogating the very facets of qualities. “You are ROBBING me, dear food,” I think with an aching heart. You are missing a valuable component that is necessary for my physical benefit. 2/3 promises? 1/3? Not good enough! The bond is broken. All health benefits are unchained like the melody that hungers for your touch (/lame Ghost reference). What will become of me when I consume you?

You may say, “Oh my dear, you are a pessimist. That’s “the glass is half empty” kind of mutterin’. You best set off and head on your way and buy yourself a kitkat or a deep fried mars bar and get some rest ‘fore your head explodes in a pile of negative goo.”

It’s a Trinity of healthy promises. When one is snatched from the grips of the food you’ve consumed, be sure to know you’ve blasphemed (ya heard me, I said BLAS-PHEEEMED) the Holy Trinity of good food attributes. It’s not holy. It’s downright abysmal. It’s missing, lacking, therefore INCOMPLETE in it’s ability to protect your from the storms of your body’s yo-yo-ing and ever-changing health. It’s stabbing your heart and leaving residues of gluttonous gunk, pilfering in permanence at the patterned stripes of your once-healthy intestines. You have sinned. And the consequences won’t be pretty.

You can tell me I think too much. Maybe you’re right.

But look at your food. Look at the “goodness” it offers when a colour, preservative, or/and flavour is inauthentic. Artificial. FAKE.

Within the context of your mental courtroom, with ALL the jury members eyes segregated but united in your intelligence and ability to explain; TELL ME.

Will YOUR defense rest?

HAHAHAHA I’m just kidding I don’t really think like that……….. O_O
